Susan has been fascinated by the visual and spiritual essence of the cow for her entire artistic career. Historically, she is following a family tradition passed down from her great grandfather, William Hart, an artist from the American Hudson River School, who specialized in painting pastoral scenes with cattle. Whatever her medium or subject, Susan strives to portray her subject’s energy and essence with a celebration of rich color and texture.
Susan was formally trained at the University of Kentucky and has since studied with inspiring artists. She became a juried member of Blue Ridge Artisan Center in 2019. Her paintings have been exhibited in numerous solo, juried and group exhibitions, internationally as well as locally and regionally.
She was awarded the Paul Green Multimedia Award for her illustrations in the book, Goodnight Boone, in 2013.

My paintings are about joy: the joy I feel while painting translates to a celebratory, energetic marriage of the real, the whimsical and the imagined.
Whatever the subject, I strive to portray its essence and energy with a joyous combination of rich color and texture.
