I used to finish the piece with “Watco Natural Danish Oil”, but now only use mineral oil. This leaves the wood stronger and might only need to be oiled at some time in the future depending upon personal preferences. These characters I create would not enjoy being kept next to direct heat as that might create a difficult environment for them and could cause them damage.
In the past I had fastened felt to the bottom of the piece but have abandoned that practice over the years in favor of a more natural approach.
I have found no way to describe my journey to the final item that you see. Occasionally I will attempt to reproduce what I see as three-dimensional figures. Other times the result is more abstract. Some of these characters are emotional and some are design essays that tell a story I feel compelled to share.
The mechanical process of removing wood is easily taught. I have had little in the way of traditional art education and to some that doesn’t need verbalization. I have however, been in many invitational and juried exhibitions as well as being featured in several galleries. This has resulted in my woodwork living in many states and several foreign countries. I do commissions within my ability and interests and have in carved more than five hundred pieces. Some are for coffee tables or walls and others are architectural in nature.
