Edgar Ingram

Edgar Ingram

Iredell County, NC

While working at the North Carolina Department of Agriculture I became interested in wood working. In 1994 I received a table saw from my co-workers as a retirement gift. The next week while traveling I purchased a small wood turned bowl in an artisan shop in Georgia. During that trip I also visited a store building that was a grocery store in a previous life and where I had conducted many inspections during my career at NCDOA. that grocery store now housed wood turned items for sale. After seeing wooden bowls and vases I was inspired to venture into the world of woodturning.

To advance this goal I joined the North Carolina Woodturners where I began to learn the art of woodturning. I also received instruction from Roger Jacobs, a professional woodturner, and the John C. Campbell Folk School in Brasstown, N.C.

My work includes a variety of woods both local and from across the country. The first step in turning a piece is to study the wood to determine how best to display the beauty and character of the wood. Not all woods are perfect, thus the challenge then becomes how to incorporate that imperfection into the design to enhance the beauty and appeal of the piece. My ultimate goal is to create a piece that someone would be proud to display in their home. My work has been displayed in art and craft shows in Statesville, Mooresville and Winston-Salem, N.C.
