Chuck Smithey

Chuck Smithey

Wilkes County, NC

From the time that I was large enough to carry and use a hammer and hand saw, I have been fascinated with wood and building. Wood scraps obtained from hounding carpenters, were assembled in various fashions by this pre-teen using only hand tools and nails. The teenage years with odd jobs allowed me to purchase hand power tools and improve the quality of projects. College at NCSU, and slightly more funds, allowed me to frequent the Craftsman tool department of Sears in Raleigh. This was my first attempt at joining wood with clamps, glue, and other materials. Entering the career working world allowed me to obtain bench power tools and expand my projects and work quality.

Working with wood must be in my DNA since my dad and grandfather were building contractors. My maternal grandfather applied funds from his medical practice to build rental houses and apartments. My career, prior to retirement, consisted of retail construction and acquisition of sites for major US retailers Lowe’s and Dick’s Sporting Goods. My son followed suit and works in residential rental construction and management, and he lives for building projects.

Hating to waste any wood, the cutting boards began by using scraps from bigger furniture projects to make gifts for family and friends. Requests to purchase cutting boards led to my current endeavor. I love highly figured wood and the many colors of wood found in forests around the world. My cutting boards, butcher blocks, trivets, and bread boards are made from woods from North America, South America, Africa, and Southeast Asia. After purchasing a small horse farm that adjoined my childhood farm, I converted the barn to a proper woodworking shop where I make my cutting boards. Making these boards provides me with great pleasure in creating a product that people can enjoy and use practically every day. I hope you like my cutting boards as much as I enjoy making them.
